New dietary guidelines on alcohol under review by the federal government threaten Pennsylvania’s beer culture, as they could soon recommend limiting or stopping any alcohol intake. That’s the view of Frank Pistella, President of the Malt Beverage Distributors Association of Pennsylvania. He writes that this shift is based on a biased process led by a secretive federal review panel of anti-alcohol advocates, who want to push prohibition-style policies. He urges Pennsylvania officials to protect the voices and values of their constituents, to ensure the guidelines are developed transparently.

Malt beverage distributors have long played a role in the fabric of our commonwealth, but their role in creating a culture of hospitality is now under threat by the anti-alcohol movement, which has burrowed its way into the Washington bureaucracy.
